How to choose the right fabric
Start with how the piece will be used
A statement chair in a formal sitting room and a family sofa used every evening are different problems, even if the client likes the same fabric for both. Durability is measured in rub counts: a light domestic fabric may be fine at 15,000, while a busy family piece or anything commercial wants considerably more. We will always tell you when a fabric you love is wrong for the job, and suggest something close that will last.
Judge fabric at full scale, in your own light
A weave or large-repeat print behaves completely differently across a three-metre sofa than it does on a swatch, and colour shifts markedly between showroom lighting and a north-facing room at home. This is the single most common source of regret in soft furnishings, and it is easily avoided. Take samples home and look at them morning and evening before committing.
Curtains and upholstery want different things
Curtain fabric is chosen for drape and weight — how it falls and holds a pleat. Upholstery is chosen for recovery and abrasion resistance — how it wears and springs back. A beautiful curtain fabric often makes poor upholstery, and the reverse is just as true. Matching a room usually means selecting complementary fabrics rather than the same one throughout.
Which houses we work with
Our library spans Designers Guild, Sanderson Design Group, Colefax and Fowler, Osborne and Little, Nina Campbell and Ralph Lauren Home, alongside contract ranges for commercial projects and our own bespoke options. If you have seen something we do not stock, we can almost always source it.
