Luxury Interior Design in York: Bespoke Interiors for Period Homes

17 June 2026 · 8 min read

York is one of England's most characterful cities to design for. It is a place of Georgian townhouses, Victorian villas and handsome village homes set in the surrounding countryside, many of them period properties with proportions that modern, off the shelf furniture rarely fits. From our studio in Shipley, a short drive away, we design and make bespoke interiors for homes across York and its affluent villages. This is a guide to how we approach luxury interior design in a city where so many of the finest homes are older ones.

Designing for York's Period Homes

Much of York's most desirable housing is period. Within the city walls and in areas such as Bootham, Bishophill and Clifton you find Georgian and Victorian townhouses with tall sash windows, generous ceiling heights and rooms of real proportion. In the villages beyond, there are farmhouses, rectories and country homes of every era.

These houses are a pleasure to work with, but they ask for a considered approach. Tall windows need curtains cut and interlined to the right length and weight, not standard sizes forced to fit. High ceilings change how a scheme is balanced. Older rooms can be draughtier, which makes the quality and lining of soft furnishings a matter of comfort as well as looks. And where a home is listed or in a conservation area, the interior should sit sympathetically with the architecture, with any external or structural changes handled through the proper consents.

Our aim in a period home is always the same: to keep what makes the house special while making it genuinely comfortable and personal to live in.

Affluent York and the Surrounding Villages

York has long been one of Yorkshire's wealthier pockets, and that shows in its housing. We work with clients across the sought after residential areas of the city, including Bishopthorpe, Fulford, Heworth, Clifton and Dringhouses, as well as the villages that ring York, from Escrick and Bishop Wilton to Nun Monkton and the edge of the Howardian Hills.

Wherever the home is, our starting point is the same. We visit, take proper measurements, and understand the light and the way the house is used before we specify anything.

Why Bespoke Suits Older Homes

In a period home, the case for bespoke is especially strong. Off the shelf furniture is built to standard dimensions, and standard dimensions rarely match a Georgian drawing room or a Victorian bay. A sofa built to the proportions of your sitting room, curtains cut for your particular windows, and joinery briefed to suit the age of the house will always read better than pieces adapted to fit.

Because we design and make in our own workshop in Shipley, we can build to those exact proportions in fabrics chosen with you from our fabric library. A well made frame in a good cloth is designed to last around 25 years and can be reupholstered rather than replaced, which suits a home you intend to keep. You can read more in our guide to the case for bespoke and our bespoke furniture service.

A Local Studio You Can Visit

York sits a short drive from our Shipley studio, which makes a proper visit easy. Clients are welcome to come and see the fabric library, handle materials at scale, and understand how a cloth behaves before committing to it. A fabric chosen from a small sample or a screen is frequently regretted; seen in context, the right one can transform a room.

Being close also means honest lead times and shorter lines of communication, and a maker near enough that, years later, a piece can be restored rather than thrown away.

How a Project Usually Runs

Most projects follow a similar shape. We begin with a conversation, ideally at your home in York or in our studio, to understand the brief, the budget and the way you live. We develop a scheme, select materials together, and agree specifications and timelines clearly before anything is confirmed. Then we make, install and see the project through to completion. Our residential design service explains each stage in more detail.

We work best when we are involved early, because decisions about furniture and window treatments interact with decisions about flooring, lighting and wall finishes, and in a period home those decisions deserve particular care.

Can you work on period or listed homes in York?

Yes. Much of our York work is in period homes, from Georgian and Victorian townhouses to country properties. We design sympathetically to the architecture, with soft furnishings and furniture made to the home’s particular proportions. Where a property is listed or in a conservation area, any external or structural changes are handled through the proper consents.

We work across the city’s sought after residential areas, including Bishopthorpe, Fulford, Heworth, Clifton and Dringhouses, as well as the villages around York such as Escrick, Bishop Wilton and Nun Monkton, and out towards the Howardian Hills.

Why is bespoke furniture better for a period home?

Period homes have proportions that standard furniture rarely fits, such as tall sash windows and high ceilings. Bespoke pieces are built to your room’s exact dimensions, and curtains are cut and interlined for your particular windows, so the result sits correctly and comfortably. A well made frame is also designed to last around 25 years and can be reupholstered rather than replaced.
